Weekend Plans - Glendi Greek Festival
March 22, 2018
It’s All Greek to Me!
Fear not that the Adelaide Fringe is over, because there’s a new festival in town for this weekend only! The Glendi Greek Festival is an explosion of food, music and culture, brought to us by our Hellenic friends.
The Glendi Greek festival first began as a fundraising event between the Lions Club of Adelaide Hellenic and West Torrens Football Club, but was such a roaring success, they have bought it back every year since.
This year, the Glendi festival will be held in its new home of Victoria Square, right in the heart of the city. Celebrating its 40th year, this event is set to be bigger than ever, and what’s better… IT’S FREE!!!
Expect to be immersed in Hellenic culture, with the finest Greek foods and music to be enjoyed. Look out for tasty favourites such as yiros and souvlaki, and for those with a sweet tooth, indulge in fresh baklava or some loukamades, the Greek version of a doughnut.
There’ll be traditional Greek music and dancing. Friday evening will focus on old friends sharing a drink and a bite to eat, with Saturday and Sunday being the main event for families.
Not a culture to shy away from friendly competition - I mean, they invented the Olympics - there will be some fun competitions run throughout the weekend inlcusing a strong arm comp, loukamades eating event and even a Greek Speaking competition.
There will also be a pop up marketplace where you will seem transported to the famous Monastiraki Markets in Athens, Greece. Here you can pick up a souvenir to remember your time at the Glendi Greek festival.
